2012 ford edge review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Also new for 2012 are subtle aerodynamic tweaks to all the models: re-shaped side mirrors and a new spoiler at the top of the liftgate. Launched as a 2007 model, edge was re-styled and substantially improved for 2011. the ford edge has been selling in strong numbers, and there's no mystery behind its success. With a blend of sedan and sport-utility attributes, edge defines the idea of a so-called crossover vehicle. It mixes the ride and handling characteristics of a mid-size sedan with the high seating, commanding view and passenger/cargo flexibility of a conventional sport-utility vehicle. From there, edge adds layers of appeal in a lot of different ways. The new 2. 0 ecoboost delivers more than adequate power with its impressive fuel economy. Based on epa ratings, all edge variants deliver excellent fuel mileage compared with similarly configured competitors. the edge is not pretty, but it does look contemporary and, well, edgy. Its visual presence is defined by a long wheelbase and short overhangs past the tires at each end. Styling updates for 2011 minimized its barrel-shaped, toy-like impact and have given the edge a more serious look. Ecoboost models get special aerodynamic aids aimed at reducing drag. a wide choice of models starts with the base edge se, which comes with all the essentials and plenty of niceties without overly complicated controls. The edge limited model approaches luxury grade with its leather upholstery, while the edge sport includes sporty paddle shifters for semi-manual shifting and piano-black trim. inside, the edge presents the finish and ambience of a good sedan with nearly all the bells and whistles, including available premium audio, navigation and rear-seat dvd entertainment. Navigation and a rearview camera are useful options, though ford doesn't have the best navigation systems. Edge can be transformed from five-seat people hauler to cargo carrier with a few quick adjustments. It can carry an eight-foot ladder or bundles of lumber inside, and still seat two. Standard active safety features include antilock brakes, ford's activetrack stability system with rollover mitigation, and a tire-pressure monitor. The insurance institute for highway safety rates the edge a top safety pick. The optional rearview camera and rear obstacle warning system can help alert the driver to a child behind the vehicle when backing up, the vision package adds a blind-sport warning system with cross-traffic alert, and all-wheel drive can improve handling stability in adverse conditions. walkaroundford edge has come to define the idea of a so-called crossover vehicle, in concept and appearance. It clearly blends the more planted look of a traditional station wagon with the taller roof and seating position of a conventional sport-utility vehicle. the edge had a substantial overhaul in both content and styling for 2011, introducing a new grille, bumpers, lights, hood and fenders. For 2012, the changes are more subtle, and intended to improve aerodynamic efficiency. by its exterior dimensions, the edge is a bit odd in the current market place, because it doesn't align closely with many of its obvious competitors. The edge has a much longer wheelbase than the kia sorrento. Overall, it comes closest in size to the chevy equinox crossover suv. If more air is required to cool the engine, the active grille shutters automatically open. If no airflow is needed, the shutters close, reducing aerodynamic drag and helping improve fuel economy. another efficiency for 2012 is low rolling resistance tires on models with 18-inch wheels (the majority sold). These tires have slightly harder rubber than conventional tires and require less energy to get and stay rolling. Ford says a 10 percent decrease in rolling resistance can translate to a 2 percent increase in fuel economy. Less rolling resistance means slightly less maximum cornering grip, however. the edge sport stands out from the other models. The differences start with a tuxedo-black grille and a larger front spoiler, carry through 22-inch wheels and tires that look like rubber washers stretched around the rims, and end with larger, oval-shaped exhaust tips under the rear bumper. interiorford edge defines the idea of a crossover vehicle inside as well as out. There's room for five sitting up high, in comfortable, sedan-style surroundings, but with a few quick adjustments there's suv-like space for bulky cargo. The finish and materials have improved steadily since the edge was introduced for 2007 and now approach luxury grade. and the edge is quieter inside than ever. Changes for 2012 focus on reducing noise in the cabin, starting with expandable foam baffles tucked into the fenders and roof pillars, and a thicker acoustically laminated windshield. the edge sport is distinguished by aluminum foot pedals and black piano-finish trim, as opposed to wood-grain in the edge limited. The sport is also the only model with shift paddles behind the steering wheel to manually operate the 6-speed automatic transmission. the driver sits high, with a commanding view forward. For 2012, a 10-way power driver's seat comes standard on all but the base se model. The same seat is optional for the passenger side. edge comes with one of two different gauge and switch packages. The se and sel have a more conventional analog instrument cluster in front of the driver, a single 4. 2-inch lcd information display at the top of the center stack of switches, and conventional climate and audio knobs and buttons below. Improved, great for family road trips. introductionsubstantially upgraded for 2013, the ford flex is an innovative vehicle, and the only full-size car of its kind. The mazda5, a distant cousin, is the same people-moving type of vehicle in the midsize class, but the larger and smoother flex is in a field of one. And 45 percent of flex owners are women. with standard seating for seven in its 2-3-2 configuration (optional 2-2-2), the flex is all about people. Except when the seats fold flat, as they easily do; then it can be all about cargo. Because flex is not built on a rugged body-on-frame chassis, it's not like an old-school suv. Nor is flex like a van. At first ford called it a crossover utility vehicle, but now ford has decided that the term is unclear, so the latest official word is that it's just a utility vehicle. We'd call it a superb cross between a limo and a taxi. The hood and roof are long and flat, the windshield stands relatively straight, the side and rear glass is flat, and the corners are sharp, although the front end has been rounded a bit for 2013. The shape is honest, simple, and even elegant, for a box. It suggests interior room and maximum space utilization. It has presence and upscale cues that some might call bling. The grille and tailgate have been redone for 2013, with a chrome or satin aluminum band, but frankly we can't say that's an improvement over the old three bars and signature blue oval. there are substantial improvements for 2013. Most notable is a revised v6 that comes standard on the base 2013 flex se and 2013 flex sel: for 2013, the 3. 5-liter v6 engine delivers 25 more horsepower, to 287 hp (with 254 foot-pounds of torque at 4000 rpm), while gaining 1 mile per gallon, to 18 city/25 highway, according to the epa. This boost to the base 3. 5-liter v6 is the result of new twin independent variable camshaft timing, or ti-vct as ford calls it. Ford continues to lead the way among american manufacturers in engine technology. the full-tilt flex limited all-wheel-drive model uses the dazzling twin-turbo 3. 5-liter ecoboost v6 with 365 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque at a super-low 1500 rpm, which gets just 2 mpg less than the base v6, or 16 city/23 highway. But we also got good miles on an easy freeway and around town, and the flex ride is smooth and composed. It's comfortable and doesn't feel firm. The cabin is silent and steady. It's a pleasure to drive. we loved the seamless 6-speed transmission shifting and programming, and the ergonomics of the perfectly designed paddles, on the limited. The 2013 flex interior looks full, spacious, and luxurious. The basics and details are well covered. Materials, plastics, fabrics, leathers and carpets are well matched with textures, and sheen is nicely controlled. The visual impression is upscale comfort and luxury, more lincoln than ford. the cabin is exceptionally quiet, as there's been a lot of work on sound deadening on the new 2013 flex, for example liners in the wheelwells. the 2013 ford flex comes with a new brake system. We used the brakes hard on curvy two-lanes, and we loved the responsiveness and pedal feel. There's also new electronic power steering with a quicker steering ratio. Although the flex is no sports sedan, the cornering is impressive for a vehicle like this, with fairly high limits. however there's more to that than the tightened steering and suspension. For 2013, there's also new torque vectoring and curve control technology. More typically found on high-performance cars, torque vectoring uses the brakes to imitate the effect of a limited-slip differential, balancing torque between the front wheels during cornering, resulting in better grip and reduced understeer. Curve control is like electronic stability control, only quicker; it senses when a vehicle is entering a curve too fast, and applies the brakes to individual wheels to cut the speed by up to 10 mph in one second. Think freeway on-ramps or off-ramps, especially in the wet. if those safety features weren't enough, the 2013 flex is available with the automotive world's first production rear inflatable shoulder belts, designed to offer improved comfort and protection for rear-seat passengers. The advanced restraint system is designed to help reduce head, neck and chest injuries for rear seat passengers, often children and older passengers who can be more vulnerable to such injuries. lineupthe 2013 ford flex comes in three models: flex se, flex sel, flex limited. the front-wheel-drive flex se 30,885) comes with ford's new 3. 5-liter ti-vct v6 engine making 287 horsepower, and a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual gear selection. Seating is three rows, of two-three-two seats in cloth upholstery, with 6-way power driver's seat. Sel trim adds foglamps, stainless steel exterior trim, power heated mirrors, 18-inch painted aluminum wheels, dual zone climate control, 10-way power driver seat and 6-way power passenger seat, myfordtouch electronic controls with 8-inch lcd touch-screen, media hub with usb ports, input jacks, and satellite radio. flex limited fwd 39,230) and limited awd 43,850) get the 3. 6-liter ecoboost twin-turbo v6 making 365 horsepower, and the 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Limited also adds chrome door handles, satin aluminum grille and liftgate trim, hid headlamps, led taillamps, 19-inch painted aluminum wheels, 110v power outlet, adjustable pedals with memory, ambient lighting, woodgrain instrument and door trim, perforated leather-trimmed seats, blis blind spot monitoring system, hd radio, push-button start, power liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, rearview camera, remote start, sony 12-speaker audio system, and voice-activated navigation system. Active safety features include torque vectoring control, curve control, anti-lock brakes (abs), advancetrac electronic traction control, rsc roll stability control, brake assist, and electronic brake force distribution (ebd). Optional all-wheel drive can enhance safety in slippery conditions. walkaroundthe ford flex is a stylish box. Some will find the shape honest, simple, and even elegant, for a box. It suggests interior room and maximum space utilization. It has presence and upscale cues that some might call bling. It's not shy. five feet eight inches tall, the flex is higher than a station wagon but lower than an suv like the ford explorer. We wonder if it's an afterthought. We're not sure if it helps or not. These indents must also help stiffen the doors, for a more solid closing sound. what does work is the addition for 2013 of black for the roof (adding to silver or white); too bad the black roof comes with a package that includes 20-inch wheels.
